Benedict Cumberbatch

There is only less than a month to go until the release of THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG EXTENDED EDITION on Blu-ray 3D and DVD, and the lovely people at Warner Bros. Home Entertainment are spoiling us with two new featurettes.

We are able to take a look behind the scenes at the magic of Lake-town and we also get a more in-depth look at how Benedict Cumberbatch delivers his performance of Smaug.  We have already seen how the SHERLOCK HOLMES star put the physical movements to his role using motion capture in a skintight grey suit and now, we see how his facial expressions are imitated in the final on-screen product of Smaug the Stupendous.

The animation specialists talk the audience through how Cumberbatch completely embodies the role of Smaug and adds so much more than just the voice of the character. As he delivers his lines, we are able to see how his facial expressions create such an enormous part of Smaug on the big screen – and it’s fascinating to see the combination:

When watching Peter Jackson‘s epic trilogy at the cinema, we see a very impressive and extensive Lake-town, the very destination where an angry Smaug is flying towards at the end of the second installment. It will be up to Bard the Bowman (Luke Evans) to see if he can prevent the beast from destroying his town.

The featurette, which gives a brilliant insight into Lake-town, can be watched here:

You can watch all of the previous deleted clips, behind-the-scenes action and featurettes here starring Martin Freeman, Benedict Cumberbatch, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen and the rest of the stellar cast. Peter Jackson does spoil us Hobbit fans!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition is available on iTunes and Blu-ray 3D and DVD from 3rd November.
