If you are a regular reader of this site then you may have read my article last week on comic book movie casting news. One of the movies I covered was SUICIDE SQUAD, the all villain team-up by Warner Bros, this is of course one of the many DC cinematic universe title being released in the near future. I talked about the various DC comics villains that would appear and who had been cast in the roles. There is an all-star cast lined up for the 2016 release including Jared Leto playing Joker and Will Smith playing Deadshot. The one character that was sure to be featured, but was at that time not cast was Amanda Waller, the woman in charge of Task Force X.
Well now we have an update on that score. On Wednesday, news sources began reporting that Viola Davis is almost done negotiating a contract with Warner Bros. to star in Suicide Squad as Amanda Waller. Apparently Davis is ready to close the deal as soon as she works out a schedule with Warner Bros. that allows her to fit in filming for HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. Davis is a mainstay on the show and therefore needs time to go away and film that at some point, however that shouldn’t be a huge problem.
Viola Davis is a fantastic actress who has starred in many high profile movies of recent years including ENDER’S GAME, THE HELP, DOUBT and PRISONERS. This is another fantastic choice that adds even more to the already considerable star power. Viola Davis doesn’t have the popularity that Oprah Winfrey does, but to be honest I think she is a better choice. Going for Oprah Winfrey would be having huge stars in the movie for the sake of it. I don’t doubt that Winfrey would have done a good job, but she doesn’t seem to suit the role quite like Davis.
At the end of the day Davis is more experienced as an actress, although Oprah has acted many time and done a very good job she doesn’t have the record of Viola Davis.
