Jake Gyllenhaal Demolition

With less than two months to go until the start of the 40th edition of the Toronto Film Festival and it has been confirmed that Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee’s DEMOLITION, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts and Chris Cooper.

Lots of news has been coming out today about event, including the first titles, which were revealed at a news conference presided over by TIFF director and chief executive Piers Handling and artistic director Cameron Bailey

The film to open up the festival will be DEMOLITION, which tells the story of Davis (Gyllenhaal), a successful investment banker, struggles after losing his wife in a tragic car crash. Despite pressure from his father in law Phil (Cooper) to pull it together, Davis continues to unravel. What starts as a complaint letter to a vending machine company turns into a series of letters revealing startling personal admissions. Davis’ letters catch the attention of customer service rep Karen (Watts) and, amidst emotional and financial burdens of her own, the two form an unlikely connection. With the help of Karen and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), Davis starts to rebuild, beginning with the demolition of the life he once knew.

During the news conference, of the 15 Galas and 34 Special Presentations announced, an interesting array of films from prolific directors will be launched there, including movies by Ridley Scott, Michael Moore, Deepa Mehta, Lenny Abrahamson, Brian Helgeland, Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson, Jason Bateman, Cary Fukunaga, Catherine Corsini, Stephen Frears, Tom Hooper, Hany Abu-Assad, Meghna Gulzar, Terence Davies, Jonás Cuarón, Julie Delpy, Rebecca Miller and Johnnie To.

TIFF director and chief executive Piers Handling is pleased with the lineup featuring work from both established and emerging filmmakers from around the world: 

“This year we are thrilled to share a diverse array of filmmakers from Australia, India, France, China, the United Kingdom and the U.S.,” said Bailey. “We look forward to sharing these fantastic films with Toronto audiences — the most engaged and enthusiastic in the world.”

The 40th edition of the festival kicks runs September 10-20 and will include a host of special events marking the four decades of the festival.
