We have already reported that the film to open the 40th edition of the Toronto Film Festival is Jake Gyllenhaal’s DEMOLITION, but at the same event, Oscar-winning actors Eddie Redmayne and Julianne Moore will launch their effort to become double Oscar winners at this year’s Festival.

Both Redmayne and Moore won a coveted Academy Award in February and once again this year, they each have films screening at the festival which is seen as the launch pad for awards season.

Redmayne appears as a transgender pioneer in THE DANISH GIRL, while Moore stars in gay rights drama FREEHELD.

The two actors are no strangers to early Oscar buzz, as both Redmayne and Moore created a lot of attention this time last year after their films THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING and STILL ALICE premiered at Toronto. Could it be a case of history repeating?

Redmayne went on to collect the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of physicist Stephen Hawking.

The British actor stars in Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper‘s THE DANISH GIRL, playing another real life character – artist Lili Elbe, one of the first recipients of sex reassignment surgery.

The film is listed as being a North American premiere, which suggests it will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival at the beginning of September.

Moore enjoyed equal success at last year’s Academy Awards claiming the Best Actress accolade for her portrayal of a college professor with Alzheimer’s.

This year, the actress stars in the real life story of New Jersey police detective Laurel Hester, who after being diagnosed with cancer fights to leave her pension to her partner, Stacie Andree.

FREEHELD also stars Ellen Page and Steve Carell as a gay rights activist.

One Oscar may not be enough and neither is one film at the event, as Moore also has a second film premiering at the festival – MAGGIE’S PLAN – a romantic comedy also starring Greta Gerwig and Ethan Hawke.

Other world premieres include Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN starring Matt Damon, Stephen Frears’ Lance Armstrong drama THE PROGRAM and Kate Winslet-starrer THE DRESSMAKER.

Johnny Depp film BLACK MASS, Jason Bateman‘s second directorial effort THE FAMILY FANG, and western flick FORSAKEN – starring Donald and Kiefer Sutherland.

There will be a lot of British interest at the event too as many stars have films screening at the festival who will likely attend include Dame Helen Mirren, Alan Rickman, Emma Watson, Idris Elba, Kate Winslet and Jeremy Irvine.

Another big film which is likely to garner a lot of attention is Tom Hardy‘s film LEGEND, in which he plays the notorious Kray twins. It will also receive its international premiere following its UK premiere on 9 September.

The 40th edition of the festival kicks runs September 10-20 and will include a host of special events marking the four decades of the festival.
