LONG SHOT is just the breath of fresh air the box office needs at the moment, after many movie-goers have put away their tissues after watching AVENGERS: ENDGAME. The movie, starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen brings the right amount of comedic scenes and romantic moments perfectly balanced in this political romcom.

The movie tells the story of Charlotte Field who is a powerful politician, the Secretary of State, hoping to get the backing of the current POTUS for her own presidential campaign when he retires and… becomes a movie actor.

When she was 16-years-old, she was an avid environmental defender and babysitter of the 13-year old Fred Flarsky. Later on, after quitting his job as a journalist after his paper was taken over by a big company, the down-on-his-luck writer bumps into her at a prestigious party and engage in a brief conversation.

When Charlotte discovers he is a talented writer, she hires him to write her political campaign speeches and you can pretty much guess the rest. They rekindle their friendship and fall in love, but amongst her political team, he is not the right kind of man to help her campaign. On the surface, they seem an odd couple but behind closed doors, they’re each others perfect match and he’s the man to help her push forward her eco-initiatives. To her, even trumps Canada’s president who is played by Alexander Skarsgård.

The film is packed with hilarious moments and funny political references that will make the audience laugh and you can’t help but find yourself rooting for the two lead characters. It is like the role reversal of many romcoms in the past, except in this movie, it is the female lead who is in charge, powerful and the one who has a thriving career.

The director, Jonathan Levine, who has worked with Rogen in the past on The Night Before, has once again brought out the best in the movie’s cast. The onscreen chemistry between Rogen and Theron feels authentic and natural, with the great casting move to have O’Shea Jackson Jr. starring as Fred’s best friend. Their shared scenes together definitely serve up the laughs.

Overall, the movie is not short on providing the giggles, creating likeable characters and delivering moments of happiness. The genre may be a familiar trope, but the onscreen dominance of the cast light up the screen.
