“Ohana” means “family.” “Family” means that no one gets left behind.

Lilo should never have worried.

Disney’s 42nd animated film Lilo and Stitch hasn’t been forgotten, as it’s set to join the ranks of the studio’s live-action remakes.

Following in the footsteps of Cinderella, Beauty and The Beast, Pete’s Dragon, and The Jungle Book; the feature will be a mix of live-action and CGI animation.

Mark Von Waes, a writer primarily known for horror, is attached to pen the script.

Released in 2002, Lilo and Stitch tells the story of Lilo, and the fugitive Experiment 626 (created to cause chaos and destruction) who she adopts as her dog, Stitch. Hunted by an intergalactic federation Stitch initially uses Lilo as a means of avoiding capture. But as time goes by the two develop a special bond, which leads Stitch to want to overcome his destructive purpose and keep his new family.

Despite the film’s modest Box Office takings of $275 million worldwide, Lilo and Stitch’s adventures continued in the direct-to-DVD sequel Stitch! The Movie and Lilo and Stitch: The Series. Which followed the duo as they sought to collect and rehabilitate other experiments like Stitch.

Other upcoming live-action reimaginings of Disney’s animated catalogue include: Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King arriving in 2019; whilst Mulan will premiere in 2020. Remakes of The Sword in the Stone and The Lady and The Tramp are expected to launch on the House of Mouse’s new streaming service.
