Derek Connolly

It appears that KING KONG prequel KONG: SKULL ISLAND has found itself a brand new writer, with JURASSIC WORLD’s screenwriter Derek Connolly putting pen to paper on a whole new kind of monster movie…

The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Connolly has been hired to do rewrites on Max Borenstein’s original script for KONG: SKULL ISLAND, a fresh take on the 1933 giant ape classic which started it all, which is also being produced by Universal and production house Legendary Entertainment.

There is a slight problem with the rewrites though – there is very limited time in which to complete it, as the film is set to begin shooting in October, with locations said to include Hawaii, Vietnam and Iceland.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is in the director’s chair for this one, with Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Corey Hawkins confirmed to appear. There have also been some casting rearrangements en route with Michael Keaton and JK Simmons set to star, but due to clashing work commitments, they were forced to withdraw because of the scheduling, leaving us wondering just who it will be that stands to replace them. Could the rewrites involve changes to the characters and their specifications? That remains unclear at the moment, but will very likely be adapted in line with the new stars.

It is not the first time that Connolly has worked with Trevorrow, having scripted Trevorrow’s breakthrough indie movie SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED and the dynamic duo are also set to reunite on sci-fi movie INTELLIGENT LIFE.

Connolly is certainly a busy man as he has also written upcoming Paramount animated movie MONSTER TRUCKS – we are definitely sensing a monster theme here!

There have been seven KING KONG movies in total to date and the cinema screens are jam-packed with remakes, reboots and re-everything of late, but the new film KONG: SKULL ISLAND is being hyped as a whole new start for the ‘Kong’ franchise. The new film is believed to focus on a team of explorers [who] venture into the mysterious, creature-laden isle that is also the home of the king of the apes. Yup, sounds very new to us… This one has got us a bit excited, so let’s hope it exceeds all of our expectations.

Kong: Skull Island is scheduled for release in March 2017.
