The Berlin Independent Film Festival has just wrapped up. Playing across the 16th – 18th February 2024, the event showcased five brand-new features, which Film And TV Now were given a look at.
 
First up was the striking documentary THE SESSION MAN, which looked at the life and times of musical sideman Nicky Hopkins whose keyboard talent could be heard on records from the likes of The Beatles and The Stones.

Then came THE MAKING OF BLOND, an experimental piece that focused on a German opera troupe whilst juxtaposing the thoughts of one of the key contributors.

Then, the environmental documentary WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE reminded us of what harsh realities await us if we don’t keep focused post-pandemic.

LICHTENBERG crossed decades and time to focus on the multiple memories of a seemingly abandoned building in a run-down borough of Berlin.

Finally, THE WASHER revealed the descent into potential madness of a man obsessed with washing machines – and the possibility that a paradox of the world could open up and save him and our Earth.

BIFF 2024 REVIEW: THE WASHER

The festival, curated by Natasha Marburger (above), is seen as a sister to her other festivals, the London Independent Film Festival (which takes place every April at the Genesis Cinema in London) and the Los Angeles International Film Festival (which runs around November time in California)
 
Each of these festivals share a common goal – to bring together independent film-making voices and talent, with opportunities for networking and seminars discussing all manner of ideas and concerns.
