I am not quite sure if taking a washing machine and attempting to BOLD-ly go where no man has gone before is going to cut it in the modern world, but for geeky ne’er-do-well wannabe lawyer Jan, the wormhole effect could be on the cards in writer/director Nils A. Witt‘s new noir fantasy, THE WASHER.

Jan (Sebastian Bos) is a mild-mannered guy, with a loving partner in Nadine (Stephanie Jost) and a chance to make it in the world thanks to his new job as an up-and-coming aspiring lawyer in a prestigious legal firm. But strangely, Jan also believes that a possible wormhole effect could be created by rinsing the universe out of his boxers. Looked on with potential by his boss, he takes up the offer of a top-floor apartment where he can practice his ‘experiments’

Before long, his obsession is literally alienating his limited circle of friends and siphoning all manner of credit from his ‘Outer Rim’ to finance this strange fetish leading to him finding bigger premises and even bigger fantasies that could create a paradoxal attempt to bring the universe back in on itself….

Now, you probably will be wondering as you watch THE WASHER whether there may be some virtue in getting a universal enlightenment from staring at the centrifuge on your own whirlpool washer, but this very weird tale is cut in part from the same cloth as David Lynch  and Terry Gilliam, coupled with elements of award favourite EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONE in that everything on occasion seems logistically inconsequential. However, this is also a test of patience and tolerance, particularly during the first half of the film when it seems there is something strange in the neighbourhood led on by Jan’s obsessive stare.

A very bizarre work to say the least, THE WASHER still has got the chops to become one of the cult faves of 2024, given the right audience and promotion.
