Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s Superman! No…wait… it’s Supergirl!
Well…almost, Melissa Benoist (of Glee fame) has already been cast in the role of the titular hero in the CBS in-development series. Now Variety reports that Mehcad Brooks will star as Jimmy Olsen, who will not only retain his status as a photographer but also act as a love interest (surprising exactly no one) for the heroine.
Jimmy Olsen is one of the most iconic and instantly identifiable (thanks to his floppy ginger hair and geek chic fashion sense) supporting characters of the Superman mythos. The character first appeared in The Adventures of Superman radio show in 1940, and debuted in the comics only a year later. In the decades since his creation by Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, Jimmy has headlined his own comic book series and has been portrayed in film and television multiple times.
Variety reports that Supergirl’s Jimmy Olsen ‘is an attractive photographer at CatCo, the media company where Kara Zor-El works, as an assistant to Cat Grant’ and ‘has been living and working in National City’ for an as yet unrevealed reason. Cue an angst-y will-they-won’t-they relationship that will enthrall teenage fans.
