After being stuck in development hell for quite sometime, it appears as if the BAYWATCH movie is moving ahead at a steady pace.

With Dwayne Johnson already locked in to play the lead in the upcoming reboot of the cheesy 90’s beach action drama/comedy, it looks as if he may be joined by a young, but equally talented comedic actor, Zac Efron.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Efron is currently in negotiations to co-star in Paramount’s new film adaptation of Baywatch.

BAYWATCH will be a buddy-lifeguard movie and centres on a by-the-book life guard (Dwayne Johnson) who is asked to mentor a young and lazy life guard trainee who isn’t so much wound up in proper procedure than he is catching a tan and checking out the beach babes. When an evil oil tycoon threatens the safety of the beach it’s up to the two to put aside their differences and pick up their floaties to save the day.

HORRIBLE BOSSES mastermind Seth Gordon will direct the film, while Damian Shannon and Mark Swift are currently writing the script. With the announcement of Efron’s possible casting this means that BAYWATCH is definitely moving forward at Paramount who are looking to shoot in early 2016.

Apart from the fact we know that Zac Efron will look good in a swimming costume, the actor has recently proven himself as a bankable screen presence, who threw away his HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL stigma with last year’s unappreciated comedy BAD NEIGHBOURS where he shown as a slightly sociopathic frat-boy, hell bent on ruining the lives of a young couple who live next door.

Efron has continued to impress with critics and general audiences and is in high demand across various studios and, including the aforementioned BAYWATCH movie, is set to appear in five films over the next year including DJ drama WE ARE YOUR FRIENDS, romantic comedy MIKE AND DAVE NEED WEDDING DATES and DIRTY GRANDPA which co-stars Robert De Niro.
