Will Poulter’s star power is certainly on the rise. Ever since he won the EE Rising Star award back in early 2014, his film career has certainly taken off, with Poulter often being the stand out element of whatever he’s in.

However for his next project Will Poulter will have to channel his inner demon, as the actor has been confirmed to be playing the terrifying Pennywise, the dancing clown in a new film adaptation of Stephen King’s horror classic IT.

TRUE DETECTIVE creator and JANE EYRE director Cary Fukunaga will direct the remake. Fukunaga has reportedly been planning the films for some time now and will split the 1,138-page novel into two films with the help of scriptwriter Chase Palmer.

The director’s interpretation of the story is being kept relatively secret, but Fukunaga has said that it will stick to the main concept of the book and tell the story of a group of kids who try to defeat a monster, that has the ability to change shape, that plagues their home town. They then return as adults to kill the monster once and for all.

Tim Curry famously portrayed the creepy kid-hunting clown in the 1990 TV adaptation of the novel, a role that Curry is now synonymous with.

Poulter may seem like an odd choice considering his age (he’s only 22) but, as previously mentioned, he’s been giving us fantastic performances since 2007’s SON OF RAMBO and with a (apparently) star making turn in this years THE REVENANT, maybe Fukunaga has seen something within the actor we haven’t had the chance to see just yet.

However, if you pardon the clown pun, Poulter will indeed have big shoes to fill to make Pennywise his own.

Is Will Poulter right for Pennywise? Can you see anyone but Tim Curry in the role? For more news as it happens keep checking back to Film and TV Now.
