X-Men

A joint press release has revealed that two shows set in the X-MEN universe are in development from Fox, FX and Marvel Studios.

It is rumoured that Marvel and Fox have struck a deal to share the television rights of the X-MEN and associated characters, in return for Marvel regaining the movie rights to the FANTASTIC FOUR.

LEGION developed by FARGO showrunner Noah Hawley will be based on the adventures of Professor Charles Xavier’s son, David Haller. He is mutant with the ability to access multiple alternative personalities, and manifest each one’s different ability.

The character first appeared in 1985s New Mutants #25 by Chris Claremont and Bill Sinkiewicz. He’s played a key role in a number of X-MEN storylines and moonlighted as an anti-fashion icon complete with paintbrush hairstyle, a leather jacket with spikes. Shoulder pads are an accessory of the future for David Haller.

The premise for the show reads:

Since he was a teenager, David has struggled with mental illness. Diagnosed as schizophrenic, David has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for years. But after a strange encounter with a fellow patient, he’s confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and visions he witnesses might be real.

HELLFIRE developed by Evan Katz, Manny Coto, Patrick McKay, and John D Payne, set in the 1960s will follow ‘a young special agent who learns that a power-hungry woman with extraordinary abilities is working with a clandestine society of millionaires-known as the Hellfire Club-to take over the world.’

The Hellfire Club previously appeared onscreen on 2011’s X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, with members Sebastian Shaw (Kevin Bacon channelling Austin Powers) and Emma Frost (January Jones) playing key roles in the movie.

The group first appeared in 1980s Uncanny X-Men # 129, and quickly asserted itself as a formidable foe for the X-Men: kidnapping mutants, corrupting them, and financing a number Sentinel (killer robots) programmes. Their an old millionaires chess club with a habit of releasing the hounds on anyone standing in their way.

The shows will form a part of Fox’s X-universe that began with X-Men in 2000.

An airdate is yet to be announced.
