“So, we’ve found out that avoiding people is a national pastime for the Brits, we shouldn’t get into a taxi without a plan and, for us, small talk is a big problem.”

Narrated by Julie Walters with personal accounts from James Corden, Freddie Flintoff, Jonathan Ross and more, VERY BRITISH PROBLEMS discusses the everyday woes that Brits are faced with, from using mobile phones to avoid conversations to walking in the same direction as the person you’ve just said goodbye to. We’ve all been there…

The new Channel 4 series, which began as a Twitter account and has since been turned into a book, aired last night. In the first episode focus is put on our interactions with others, looking closely at the following;

  • Having no idea what to say or do when meeting other people
  • Being in a conversation where you don’t know the other person’s name
  • Pretending you have heard someone when you haven’t
  • Accidentally adopting an accent that you then have to keep up for an entire conversation
  • How to make..small talk
  • Running out of chat three minutes into a haircut
  • Being horrified at the thought of saying anything to your doctor
  • Defending your personal space on public transport
  • Achieving the correct level of friendliness with your neighbour
  • Inviting people to stay and not really meaning it
  • Saying a swift and efficient “goodbye”

VERY BRITISH PROBLEMS continues next Thursday at 9pm on Channel 4.
