It was news that we were all expecting, but didn’t want to hear – Paramount Pictures has confirmed that Top Gun: Maverick will be pushing back the film’s release from late June to Christmas 2020 amid the coronavirus pandemic.

This is one of many movies that has seen its Hollywood release date rescheduled from summer to a later date due to the global impact of the coronavirus.

This is not the only film affected by the pandemic, as the studio has also announced a new release date for John Krasinksi’s sequel A Quiet Place Part II, which will open in cinemas September 24th, 2020 all being well. Other delayed releases include The Spongebob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which has now been moved to July 31st and The Tomorrow War, a military sci-sci war movie, starring Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, J. K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Mike Mitchell and Sam Richardson has lost its December 25th release date and is yet to be set a new one.

All cinemas are currently closed because of the virus and as the disease is at different stages around the world,  there is no set date for movie theatres to once again open the doors to enjoy films together once again.

Of course, we’re sure the wait will be worth it! What makes the sequel perfect is Tom Cruise is back in TOP GUN: MAVERICK, but what we would like to know is, are you sure it’s not a prequel? Tom Cruise has not aged one bit!

TOP GUN: MAVERICK
Tom Cruise plays Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose”.

Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Joining Cruise in the sequel is Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman with Ed Harris. Calling the shots on this one is Joseph Kosinski with Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison on producer duties.

TOP GUN: MAVERICK
Tom Cruise plays Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

The original Top Gun was directed by Tony Scott in 1986, making over $350m worldwide and we have a feeling that the sequel will be just as popular, if not more so!

What do you think of the movie’s release date being moved to Christmas? Do you think that is a good time of the year for the film to be released? As always, we like to know your thoughts, so leave a comment below, tweet us @filmandtvnow or drop us a comment on our Facebook page.
