oscars-2014

The Oscars air this Sunday and this year’s nominees for Actress In A Leading Role and Actress In A Supporting Role are seriously impressive with the likes of Marion Cotillard, Felicity Jones, Rosamund Pike, Reese Witherspoon and Julianne Moore up for the win, as well as Patricia Arquette, Emma Stone, Meryl Streep, Laura Dern and Keira Knightley.

We recently looked at five of the most famous actors who’d never won an Oscar and so we thought it was only right to celebrate the ladies of cinema with our Top Five Incredible Actresses Who Have Never Won An Oscar.

1. VIOLA DAVIS

Viola Davis

Starting her acting career in 1996 playing a nurse in TV show THE SUBSTANCE OF FIRE, Viola David has gone on to have an incredible career and we cannot believe she hasn’t bagged an Oscar yet! Back in 2009, Davis received her first Oscar Nomination for her supporting role in John Patrick Shanley‘s drama DOUBT, co-starring the late Philip Seymour Hoffman. Davis did a phenomenal job at portraying the despairing mother of a young student in trouble but unfortunately lost the award to Penelope Cruz for her role in VICKY CHRISTINA BARCELONA.

Davis went on to bag another nomination in 2012 for her stunning role as Aibileen Clark in Tate Taylor‘s THE HELP. Davis’ performance as an African American maid in the 1960’s sent the audience into an emotional stupor as she fully committed to this complex character. Davis lost out to Meryl Streep, who bagged the award for her role in THE IRON LADY. These however, aren’t Davis’ only career highlights, she’s starred in the likes of FAR FROM HEAVEN, EAT PRAY LOVE, GET ON UP and has recently found success with the American television series HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. One of our favourite role just has to be her Oscar nominated role in the stunning THE HELP, check it out.

2. HELENA BONHAM CARTER

Helena Bonham Carter

She’s one of Britain’s most beloved actresses, so how is it that the incredible Helena Bonham Carter has never won an Oscar for her efforts? Back in 1998 she scooped up a nomination for her leading role in THE WINGS OF THE DOVE, but lost out when Helen Hunt won for her role in AS GOOD AS IT GETS. Bonham Carter was nominated again more recently in 2011 for her supporting role in Tom Hooper‘s THE KINGS SPEECH, which co-starred Colin Firth. Carter lost out however when Melissa Leo won the award for her role in THE FIGHTER.

An amazing character actress, Helena Bonham Carter has had an impeccable career worthy of so much. She’s starred in the likes of ALICE IN WONDERLAND, SWEENEY TODD, CORPSE BRIDE, PLANET OF THR APES, BIG FISH and FIGHT CLUB. She’s set to star in the latest CINDERELLA movie and has a number of different projects coming up, including ALICE IN WONDERLAND: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS and SUFFRAGETTE so there’s still time for her to bag that coveted award! We’re rooting for you, Carter! One of our favourite roles has got to be the evil Bellatrix Lestrange in the HARRY POTTER series, take a look!

3. MICHELLE WILLIAMS

Michelle Williams

This talented starlet has had her fair share of nominations but has never won the title of best leading and supporting actress; criminal! Michelle Williams was first nominated back in 2006 for her supporting role in the emotional BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, but lost out when Rachel Weisz scooped the award for her role in THE CONSTANT GARDENER. Again, Williams bagged a nomination in 2011 for her leading role in BLUE VALENTINE, but lost to Natalie Portman who starred in BLACK SWAN. Her most recent nomination was in 2012 where Williams was noticed for her role in Simon CurtisMY WEEK WITH MARILYN. Williams blew audiences away with her performances as the famous, well loved star but just missed out on the award when Meryl Streep won.

Williams’ recently starred in 2013 OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL as well as Saul Dibb‘s SUITE FRANCAISE. Her next project is in the stages of pre-production as she prepares to star in Kenneth Lonergan‘s MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA alongside Casey Affleck. Williams has a brilliant ability to pick the very best, challenging characters so we have pretty high hopes that she’ll bag an Oscar sometime soon. In the mean time, check her out in the adorable and heartbreaking BLUE VALENTINE, co-starring Ryan Gosling.

4. KEIRA KNIGHTLY

Knightly

This English rose is another leading lady we can’t believe hasn’t scooped up an Oscar yet! Back in 2006 Knightley was nominated for her leading role as Elizabeth Bennet in Joe Wright‘s remake of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE but lost out to Reese Witherspoon for her role in WALK THE LINE. However, Knightley is up for another chance to bag an award for supporting actress tomorrow night as she’s been nominated for her role in THE IMITATION GAME, alongside fellow nominee, Benedict Cumberbatch. We’re rooting for you, Knightley!

Knightley boasts an impressive career that really began with her role in horror flick THE HOLE and quirky British comedy, BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM. She’s gone on to star in the likes of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series, LOVE ACTUALLY, DOMINO, NEVER LET ME GO and ANNA KARENINA. Her next role will be in Baltasar Kormakur‘s EVEREST, but one of our favourites has to be her heartbreaking role in ATONEMENT co-starring James McAvoy. We’ll be waiting for bated breath to see how Knightley gets on at Sunday night’s awards but in the mean time, take a look at ATONEMENT.

5. JULIANNE MOORE

Julianne Moore

This major star is well known for being one of Hollywood’s most talented leading ladies and yet she’s never been recognized by The Academy. Could this be her year? Starting in 1998, Moore was nominated for her supporting role in drama BOOGIE NIGHTS but lost to Kim Basinger for her part in LA CONFIDENTIAL. She was nominated again in 2000 for her leading role in THE END OF THE AFFAIR but missed out when Hillary Swank coveted the gong for BOYS DON’T CRY. Her third nomination came in 2003 for her role in FAR FROM HEAVEN but the prize went to Nicole Kidman for THE HOURS.

Now this year, Moore is up for the leading actress award again in Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland‘s STILL ALICE, which co-stars Kate Bosworth, Hunter Parrish and Kristen Stewart. Moore has already bagged a Golden Globe and BAFTA for her role in STILL ALICE so could this be her year to finally win the award? She’s up against some tough competition but this leading lady has got some serious star quality.
