THIS BEAUTIFUL FANTASTIC follows a woman as she is forced to tidy the overgrown garden of her rented home or face eviction. Bella (JESSICA BROWN FINDLAY) leads a quiet life where everything has its place and everything is in order… except the garden. She befriends her grumpy elderly neighbour (TOM WILKINSON) and his cook (ANDREW SCOTT) and discovers a new passion for gardening and the importance friendship.

The film starts off with a clunky, cliche storybook introduction that is a little off-putting. It’s ‘there once was a girl…’ beginning is enough to make anyone with a hint of cynicism roll their eyes. However, the characters are all very endearing, and you soon begin to get into the spirit of This Beautiful Fantastic. The storybook theme of the film follows through from beginning to end and there’s a fairytale feel to the whole film, blending between real life and fantasy.

Sticking with the fairytale impression, all the actors suit the theme perfectly. They each play their roles well, obviously understanding the aim of the film. Tom Wilkinson is great as the cantankerous Mr Stephenson, a grumpy old man with a heart of gold. Jessica Brown Findlay does really well playing a sort of Alice in Wonderland-type character, as she discovers her love of gardens.

If you’re looking for a nice little film to enjoy on a Sunday afternoon, This Beautiful Fantastic is perfect. A well structured, entertaining and lighthearted film.
