Released in cinemas in late February 2024, THE MOON THIEVES returns us to the classic heist yarn, with Cantopop sensations Mirror finding themselves with a determination to have time on their hands….and money in their wallets if all goes well.

The game’s afoot for a Hong Kong gang of thieves, one of whom is impeccable at creating genuine fake watches who have a grand plan to steal – then substitute – three rare examples created by the artist Pablo Picasso, worth a fair amount if you want to imagine a fair amount more than that.
However, one of the gang has got a fetish for the first ever watch worn on the Moon by Buzz Aldrin in 1969 (Neil Armstrong apparently left his in the lunar module as back up!!). The man in question, Vincent, is trying to secure enough money so he can pay for his mother’s eye treatment to stop him going blind. However, his nemesis Uncle is keen for him to demonstrate his abilities for master fakery.

The trek leads them to a Japanese rare watch retailer. However, there are plenty of obstacles, namely concrete and an antique safe which has a default method of access, provided you have an affinity for hearing and turning the wheels correctly on the safe to crack the combination. Soon enough, the consequences of this catch will be felt across the board by both legitimate and illegitimate souls…..

In turns both darkly comic and violent, but well structured and holds the attention throughout, coupled with some well-staged action and a convincingly plotted heist that keeps you in check. Fans of OCEAN’S ELEVENLOCK STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELSJohn Woo and Quentin Tarantino will lap up a fine example of Far Eastern hokum that isn’t overly complex and maintains interest throughout. Fans of Mirror most certainly will be focused on the eye candy whilst entertained by the film.
