A trailer can make or break a film; give too much away and the audience can be left to feel like there’s no need to actually pay their money to see the rest, give too little away and it may not engage enough people to actively want to see it either. New film SPRING choses the latter and shows a story of a man who flees the US to Italy, only to fall in love with a mysterious beautiful woman.

The plot starts in the darkest way possible with our protagonist, Evan, comforting his dying mother in bed, before later getting into a fight at her funeral. This causes him to flee to the first location that comes into his head, Italy. The huge jumps in plot seems slightly comical, however because the film adopts such a self-defeatist funny tone the audience can’t help but buy into the fascinating story. The Italian landscapers are truly breathtaking and give the low budget film a cinematic blockbuster flavour, perfectly matched by the mesmerising beauty of the female lead character, Louise.

The introduction of the mysterious love interest give the film a seemingly new shift as the relationship between the couple plays out like a fairly standard rom-com in stunning surroundings. However this familiarness is completely shattered into oblivion after the pair spends their first night together. The complete jolt in story seems an extraordinary one as the film goes from an intriguing love story to an off the map supernatural thriller, a gear-shift similar to that of FROM DUSK TILL DAWN.

Somehow the film manages to retain its warmth, humour and compelling intriguing, despite taking the audience to a completely alien world. The relationship between Evan and Louise is heart-warmingly genuine, whilst Nadia Hilker does a sublime job of portraying a character that is by all means a monster, but you also genuinely care about her deeply. Every section of the film is enjoyably unpredictable and despite constantly keeping its audience guessing it retains its bright and intelligent personality without compromise. Whilst the fantasy element may originally seem unnecessary and strange, by the end it’s what makes the film stand out as an absolute classic, that will sit alongside other triumphs of the genre such as LET THE RIGHT ONE IN.
