Jake Gyllenhaal Southpaw

Jake Gyllenhaal’s back on the big screen after his last big film NIGHTCRAWLER and we get to see him in action in the new SOUTHPAW trailer.

In this very different role, the actor has undergone a significant physical transformation, as he roams the ring as a beat-up boxer looking for one last fight in order to win back custody of his daughter.

It has been a while since we first got a glimpse of Jake Gyllenhaal in character when an official photo was released and now we can see a good bout of the film thanks to the arrival of the trailer for Antoine Fuqua’s SOUTHPAW.

Gyllenhaal stars as Billy Hope, a former lightweight champ hauling himself back into the ring for one last fight after the death of his wife (Rachel McAdams) and the state’s removal of his daughter (Oona Laurence) into care.

Originally conceived as a star vehicle for Eminem and touted as a sequel of-sorts to 8-Mile, the trailer’s debuted on the rapper’s website. Gyllenhaal, who shot Southpaw directly after playing gaunt newshound Lou Bloom in NIGHTCRAWLER, packed on the pounds for Fuqua. What a transformation he has made too. He looks buff, beaten up and battered and will no doubt see another outstanding performance from the character who continues to impress with his character choices.

The script has been co-written by Richard Wenk who penned THE EQUALIZER, THE EXPENDABLES 2 and THE MECHANIC and has been brought to the big screen by Fuqua. It’s not short on energy either as we see mirrors get smashed, cars whipping around roads and of course action in the ring.

SOUTHPAW arrives in US and UK cinemas on 31st July.
