Some time ago images were released of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman shooting for SHERLOCK. These set pictures caused quite a buzz in the hive of rumours we call the internet, this being due to the fact that the costumes and set appeared to have a Victorian style. The stories of Sherlock Holmes were of course originally based in Victorian England, however this recent adaptation written by current DOCTOR WHOÂ lead writer STEVEN MOFFATÂ and another mainstay of DOCTOR WHO, Mark Gatiss is based in modern times. This got many SHERLOCKÂ fans speculating, perhaps a time travel element was being introduced in Sherlock, Moffat certainly has a history with that kind of plot detail. The images could be from a dream sequence or maybe Sherlock and John were attending a costume party.
Well we finally have an answer to something that has been niggling at many fans for some time now. Moffat and Gatiss were forced to let the cat out of the bag and inform us that the Christmas episode is to be a one-off special based in Victorian England. The actors will all still portray their respective roles except for the fact that we will be transported back to the Victorian Era. It should be fun to see actors we have previously seen in-character in modern day play that character with a lot less technology at their disposal. The episode will no doubt be chock full of references to other adaptations of Sherlock Holmes that were set in the same era as the source material.
Steven Moffat had this to say in an interview with Entertainment Weekly: “The special it its own thing. We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special. It’s not part of the run of three episodes…It’s Victorian.” Although I am excited to see what they will do with this part of me wishes it would come later, after the next three episode run. This is purely due to selfish reasons… I need to know what happens next. Last episode ended on a huge cliff-hanger and we have to wait to until 2016 to find out what happens next.
