Sherlock

It feels like an age since we last visited the Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson at 221B Baker Street. Season three of the beloved BBC detective drama hit our screens way back in the winter of 2013 and was a mammoth success for the BBC over the holiday season bringing in around 12 million viewers for each episode, making it one of the highest viewed drama series for the BBC in over a decade.

Since the third season concluded, fans have been clamouring for news of the brand new season as well as the previously announced Christmas Special.

The BBC have announced that fans will be able to catch the return of the detective duo on the big screen as well as revealing when the special will air. Listen to the moment it was announced at London’s MCM Comic Con event below:

The special, titled “Sherlock: The Abominable Bride”, will air on the 1st of January 2016 (New Year’s Day) on BBC one, and will see the return of Benedict Cumberbatch as the world’s greatest detective Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as his begrudgingly loyal friend Dr. John Watson. Also set to appear in the special is Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs, Amanda Abbington and Louise Brealey.

The special will show a departure for the show modern-day setting as it will take place within 1895’s London, where the original books by Arthur Conan Doyle originally took place.

You can watch the trailer for the special below.

If you’d like to see it on a big screen with other die-hard Sherlock fans, the BBC have released plans that will give you the ability to watch the special in select cinemas simultaneously as it airs on TV nationwide.

Sherlock 2

This isn’t the first time that the BBC has ventured into putting their television drama’s onto the big screen, having previous released the DOCTOR WHO 50th anniversary special and the first episode of the 8th season of the adored science fiction show. These efforts proved to be a great success for the station as both of the special events managed to make it into the UK top ten box office for the week of their release, something I’m sure SHERLOCK will be able to achieve.

The SHERLOCK special will be shown in all branches of Picturehouse cinemas as well as selected Odeon’s and Vue Cinemas and will features behind the scenes footage and special never before seen footage from the show that will not be shown anywhere else.
