If there is one genre that Hollywood regards as a sure thing currently next to comic-book adaptations, it is zombie flicks. Not surprisingly, they still prove financially viable in the long run. They are simple to produce, simple to script and easy to create.

SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE is not going to offer you anything other than what the title suggests – and that is how it should be. This is about as cheerful a beer-and-curry-on-a-Saturday-night movie should be.

There is nothing new about it – geeks uncool as they come suddenly become the saviours of the universe when their small town is overcome with Romero wannabes and have to use their seemingly obsolete skills and uncool principles to assert their authority.

Wisely, however, the film-makers cut to the chase from the very outset and waste no time piling on the gore and laughs in a film that honours ideas and concepts used recently in the likes of SHAUN OF THE DEAD and ZOMBIELAND. More astute observers will sense a touch of Peter Jackson‘s BRAIN DEAD (or DEAD ALIVE) amongst other homages and FROM DUSK TIL DAWN towards the end.

Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse

Through all this, the chemistry between the four principal scouts is up there with AMERICAN PIE, as they discuss how to get the girl and how to become part of that cool clique and party atmosphere and have to contend with all sorts of innovative A-TEAM style ways of disposing of the undead.

I thoroughly enjoyed it for what it was and it is a movie that should provide no end of fun when it is released both on film and in the home entertainment market. Swift returns, good times and lots of gore and scares – what good horror films should be. Highly enjoyable.
