Director: Andy Stewart
Cast: Lucy Goldie, Nicholas Vince

Andy Stewart has been causing quite a buzz on the horror film festival circuit for the past few years. His latest film, REMNANT, goes down a different path from his previous work. Instead of grossing his audience out, this time, he decides to emotionally disturb them.

REMNANT is a short film following young professional Claire as she begins to suffer from terrible nightmares and sleep deprivation. She frequently wakes up with strange bruises and marks on her body and often has no memory of the night before.

Lucy Goldie gives a great performance here and there is an interesting cameo by Nicholas Vince (HELLRAISER).

One of the great things about REMNANT is its atmosphere, with only two people really in the film, the isolation of the main character is well written and well shot, Goldie carries the film really well. It is difficult to explain how well the film works without giving away any major spoilers, the film has a big reveal towards the end that will intrigue or even shock you.

There are a few reminiscent flares from Andy Stewart‘s previous work, but REMNANT has virtually no gore but still manages to disturb you. His previous films have almost been in homage to classic body-horror films, with his use of practical gore effects even causing members of the audience to vomit! REMNANT is more or less gore free with some creepy effects scattered throughout, but you can clearly see it is paying homage to classic horror. Without giving anything away, this film is an encouraging sign that Andy’s career in horror is expanding.

Overall, if you have enjoyed his previous films, you will enjoy REMNANT. It is very different, but the style of writing and the strong feeling of dread throughout the film are excellent. If you have never seen any of his short film before, but are interested in horror, this is a great film to start with.
