A niche, but ever-growing market for film fans is the Alternate Poster.
In April 2019, at London’s Old Street Gallery, PosterSpy’s cream of the crop of artists assembled to showcase their wares and for some of them to gain a few rewards for their efforts.
The PosterSpy community submit a portfolio into the contest, which are then judged by six industry professionals who have a thorough understanding of what it takes to be ‘an incredible poster artist’
Over beer and pizza, Film And TV Now amongst other guests were allowed a glimpse.
Ten artists were shortlisted and here are the picks:
WINNER: EILEEN STEINBACH
Eileen Steinbach hails from Hannover, Germany and has been a life-long movie fan.
Her style is minimalist and covers a wide range of film projects. She has recently been working with clients like Marvel and Sony Pictures.
SECOND PLACE: BEN TURNER
Residing in Bristol, England, Ben Turner is an illustrator and designer. Influenced by the likes of INDIANA JONES and HALLOWEEN (1978), he has been infected with the John Carpenter synth scores. He works principally within a Digital framework creating portraiture and taking fundamental ideas from a number of sources.
THIRD PLACE: DAVE MERRELL
A full-time professional illustrator based in Manchester, England, Dave Merrell worked with Greeting Cards and in Sports illustration, beginning with a small Football exhibition in London and evolving iht clients like UEFA and ESPN. He was also one of the official STAR TREK artists, commissioned to create art to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the cult show.
RUNNERS-UP
NEIL DAVIES
A freelance illustrator and artist for 10 years, who began more as a caricature artist, Neil Davies has put his skills to good use in the alternate poster art arena and in 2018 was commissioned by Marvel to produce a licensed poster to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of IRON MAN.

ALEKSANDER WALIJEWSKI
A freelance graphic artist based in Poznan, Poland. Alekander is a prominent fixture at many exhibitions worldwide including Mexico and the USA and has a talent for reinterpretation, be it on a personal or professional level.
SCOTT SASLOW
A magna cum laude graduate of Florida Atlantic University who once created a poster a day for each day of a year, Scott Saslow now encompasses a number of clients including up-and-coming indie film-makers, plus an Oscar nominee.
ADAM STOTHARD
Based in Bristol, UK, Adam Stothard is inspired by comics and film and his achievements include being commissioned by Studio Canal to create an official alternative poster for Steven Soderbergh’s LOGAN LUCKY, which enabled him to turn a hobby into a career.

CRISTIAN ERES
Born in Valencia in 1990 and influenced by numerous European sci-fi artists, Christian Eres works via a mix of digital support and a traditional ink drawing technique and creates limited edition serigraphs of his favourite animated, fantasy and sci-fi films.
ADAM COCKERTON
A freelance Art Director and designer living in London, Adam Cockerton worked as an Art Director at Legendary Entertainment on campaigns for the likes of KONG: SKULL ISLAND and PACIFIC RIM before going freelance in 2018 and subsequently working on Indie film campaigns.
ZI XU
A Chinese-American illustrator, concept designer and poster artist who graduated from the Maryland Institute College Of Art in 2018 and currently works as a freelancer on concept and poster art for a variety of clients and galleries.
An amazing glimpse into this exciting and fascinating aspect of entertainment and media will certainly provide excitement and inspiration for anyone who loves art and movies.
