Steven Knight has penned the script which sees Kristen Stewart portray Princess Diana

Kristen Stewart has signed on to play Princess Diana in SPENCER. In the director’s chair for this one is Pablo Larraín bringing to life a drama that will no doubt prove to be a popular feat for the virtual Cannes Market.

The movie has been penned by Steven Knight and it will focus on a critical weekend in the early ‘90s, when Diana decided her marriage to Prince Charles wasn’t working. At this point she decided to steer in her own direction from that which could have seen her as queen.  The drama takes place over three days, in one of her final Christmas celebrations in the House of Windsor in their Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England. It has also been confirmed that the movie will not portray Diana’s tragic death, but will focus on her difficulties and fraying relationships that helped make her decision to leave the royal family.

This film will no doubt draw a lot of attention and publicity as it goes through production to release and it will prove to be a very different role for Kristen Stewart who definitely has the talent to pull this one off.  She too has experienced an overwhelming media interest in her private life after bursting into the public eye when starring in the TWILIGHT movies, so there may be lots of elements that she is able to relate to when performing the role of one of the most famous members of royalty. Steven Knight is an accomplished scriptwriter and has penned a variety of projects over the years including EASTERN PROMISES, PEAKY BLINDERS, LOCKE and THE HUNDRED-FOOT JOURNEY.

The film will be produced by Larraín, director, largely known for the film Jackie and Neruda, along with Fabula partner Juan de Dios, Jonas Dornbach, Janine Jackowski and Paul Webster.

All being well with the current COVID-19 pandemic, production is scheduled to commence at the start of 2021.
