British star Eddie Redmayne was overcome with emotion as he was named Best Actor at the Academy Awards for his performance as Professor Stephen Hawking in THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING.
The 87th Academy Awards took place at the Dolby theatre in Los Angeles and were hosted by GONE GIRL star Neil Patrick Harris.
Eddie Redmayne, lauded for his performance as Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory Of Everything, saw off competition from big names including, Michael Keaton, Bradley Cooper, Steve Carell and his friend – and fellow Brit – Benedict Cumberbatch.
Redmayne, who has enjoyed so much success during the award season accepted his award from Cate Blanchett, a shocked Redmayne said: “I don’t think I’m capable of articulating quite how I feel right now. I’m fully aware that I’m a lucky, lucky man”.
He dedicated the award to “all of those people around the world battling” motor neurone disease – the illness that left Professor Hawking in a wheelchair.”
Such sentiments were echoed by best actress winner Julianne Moore, who took the award for her portrayal of a woman diagnosed with early onset dementia in STILL ALICE, one of whose directors is an ALS sufferer.
JK Simmons, as expected, won best supporting actor for his role in WHIPLASH, which a further two awards for editing and sound mixing.
BIRDMAN, Alejandro González Iñárritu’s satire about an ageing movie star trying to reinvent himself as a credible Broadway actor, took best picture and three other top awards at the 2015 Oscars, upending an awards season that had largely been playing out according to expectations.
The hotly-tipped BOYHOOD – which took best drama and best director at the Golden Globes last month – lost out in both categories at the final hurdle, although Patricia Arquette secured best supporting actress.
THE IMITATION GAME once again did not pick up as many awards as hoped, walking away with only Graham Moore winning for best adapted screenplay.
THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, Wes Anderson’s film bagged three awards – best costume design, makeup, production design and score, whilst AMERICAN SNIPER scooped just one award, for sound editing.
