Wicked

Fans of the hit musical WICKED rejoice! It has been confirmed that we WILL see a movie adaptation of the popular theatre show.

Rumour of the production hitting the big screen have been rife for some time now, but we now know it is official thanks to the movie’s producer, Marc Platt (who was the original producer of the stage musical).  He is no stranger to musical-to-movie transitions, as he has recently worked on big screen musical INTO THE WOODS starring Meryl Streep and now the producer confirmed a date for the production.

We don’t have long to wait with the release planned for 2016 and after discussing the project with Film Divider, he also confirmed that BILLY ELLIOT helmsman, Stephen Daldry will direct.

“[A 2016 release date] is the goal, but I don’t know whether we’ll make that goal or not,” he said.

“We will make the movie, but like I said, the bar is really high. We’re going to scrutinise our work on the screenplay and our prep on the movie, and when we feel like it’s ready, okay.”

The hit musical is based on the 1995 book ‘Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ by Gregory Maguire and has broken box office records around the world since it debuted in 2003.

Over two million people have seen it in its West End and Broadway and the musical has celebrated its tenth year on stage.

Some of the best musicals have taken years in the making before they received a big screen animation: INTO THE WOODS took 27 years before its adaptation and the hugely successful LES MISERABLES took 30 years. So we have a feeling that this latest musical-come-movie will definitely be worth the wait…
