Doctor Strange

Is it just me or has the Marvel Cinematic Universe news dried up recently? With the release of the charming ANT-MAN a month ago, the powerhouse production company has eased off the whole dominating the daily movie news thing? Today, thanks to a BAFTA evening class, cinematographer Ben Davis has revealed some interesting tit-bits about their upcoming DOCTOR STRANGE Movie.

Ben Davis is one of Marvel‘s go-to cinematographers, having shot both last year’s GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY and this year’s AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON. When asked a question about his upcoming projects, Davis spoke at length about his involvement with Marvel’s DOCTOR STRANGE.

“It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it’s not your typical Marvel action movie,”

Davis then went on to describe what his initial reaction and thoughts on the project were, stating that the best way to describe it would be “Marvel’s Fantasia”.

“Most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.”

Davis talked briefly about the inspiration for the inter-dimensional travel that is a big part of the DOCTOR STRANGE Universe. Davis states that the work of Artist M. C. Escher, whose mathematical and impossible artistic design has been a big source of inspiration for the upcoming Marvel tent pole picture.

“There’s a lot of previsualisation, and there’s a lot of work which is very hard – you look at it and you see the imagery that they’ve created for it and you think, ‘well how the hell do we shoot that?’ because it’s all sort of Escher stuff.”

Davis ended his speech with the close line “I can’t really say much more about it, I’m afraid. But I think it’ll be really interesting, and it’s a very dark movie, I’m pleased to say.”

DOCTOR STRANGE, despite his outlandish costume and emphasis on the spiritual and the unknown, has always been a far more serious and level headed character within the Marvel universe. This new dark and science heavy tone that Davis has suggested wouldn’t be a miss match for the character and the film, which looks to be one of Marvels more adult films to date.

DOCTOR STRANGE is due to be released on Novemeber 4th worldwide with Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejifor attached to star.
