By the power of Grayskull! He-Man and the Masters of the Universe are back!

Director and writer Kevin Smith is helming a new anime for Netflix, titled Masters of the Universe: Revelation.

The series is a direct sequel to the original 1983 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe cartoon. After a ferocious battle, Teela must solve the mystery of the missing Sword of Power to prevent the end of the Universe. And fan-favourites He-Man, Orko, Cringer and Man-At-Arms will assemble against Skeletor, Evil-Lyn, Beast Man and the legions of snake mountain.

Announced at Power-Con in Anaheim, Calif. Smith revealed he will serve as showrunner, and Castlevania’s Powerhouse Animation will bring the series to life.

”In Revelation, we pick up right where the classic era left off to tell an epic tale of what may be the final battle between He-Man and Skeletor! This is the Masters of the Universe story you always wanted to see as a kid!” Smith said in a statement.

The anime appears unrelated to Sony and Mattel Films cinematic plans for He-Man and his band of Heroic Warriors. Targeting a 2021 release date, the film reportedly stars Noah Centineo as Prince Adam.

Somewhat surprisingly, Eternia’s greatest hero hasn’t seen action for a while. Apart from the early noughties He-Man and the Masters of the Universe revamp cancelled after only two seasons.

Netflix has seen success with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, which has avoided introducing of her brother. Brimming with colourful, memorable characters, and celebrating friendship and joy, it’s difficult to see how the loincloth wearing hero would fit. Due to the clash in tone, series producer Noelle Stevenson revealed He-Man probably won’t appear on the show, despite the family connection.

Netflix is yet to announce a release date for Masters of the Universe: Revelation.
