Thor The Dark World- battle scene
Chris Hemsworth will reprise his role as the titular character.

Ragnarok is an event in Norse mythology in which the people of the time prophesied that the universe along with their gods would die. It also happens to be the subject of the third THOR film.

THOR’s side of the Marvel Universe is of course steeped in Norse mythology so it is the natural progression for the comics to eventually come to the “Twilight Of The Gods”. It makes sense for Marvel Studios to eventually utilise this story arc from the source material. If you are making a franchise of films based on these works, the idea of the entire cosmos collapsing along with its god-like beings is perfect fodder for a dramatic fantasy movie.

Marvel Studios are looking to make the third movie bigger than the previous two so it is fitting that it will be titled THOR: RAGNAROK.

Umberto Gonzalez of Heroic Hollywood showed up on the Popcorn Talk Podcast network recently, claiming that the director of the first THOR film may return for the third instalment. The first movie was pretty solid, a decent introduction to the characters and the concepts surrounding the mythos. It wasn’t the box office breaking success that Marvel wanted however and for the sequel they went with Alan Taylor. It was his debut directing a feature film, the film was a bit of a box office flop. Marvel are clearly offering Branagh the job as a safe pair of hands for the big event film they have planned.

Branagh most recently directed Disney’s live-action CINDERELLA, which was not only a huge hit at the box office, but a hit with critics and audiences alike.

Thor Tom Hiddleston
Tom Hiddleston will reunite with Chris Hemsworth for the third installment.

Despite the question mark hanging over who will be in the director’s chair for the third movie, what we do know is that both Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are set to reprise their roles as Thor and Loki, respectively, with RAGNAROK’s story line providing the reason why we won’t see Hemsworth in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.

THOR: RAGNAROK is currently scheduled for a November 3rd, 2017 release — so there’s no need to panic just yet over who will be calling the shots.
