Who?

Even before they were film stars, we all knew the names of Marvel’s biggest characters: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, the Hulk, etc. Those are the characters that have been front-and-center of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the most part. But other characters we’d never heard of before their films, such as the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, have also become major players.

With no character too obscure Marvel could potentially be developing a film for one of their most left-field properties.

In an interview with The Wrap Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige revealed: “Eternals is one of many, many, many things that we are actively beginning to have creative discussions about to see if we believe in them enough to put them on a slate.”

Marvel Eternals

Created by Jack Kirby in 1976, the Eternals were the result of genetic experiments performed on early humans by the Celestials, cosmic gods. The Eternals were granted a longer lifespan, superpowers, and when in a group of three, the ability to create a Uni-Mind, a psionic entity with all the  powers of the trio .They were  intended to act as the defenders of Earth, from the Deviants, grotesque monsters created from the same experiment. A feat the Eternals managed every so often, otherwise keeping themselves apart from humanity.

Later in the same interview, Feige said that numerous screenwriters were working on scripts focused on a story from the perspective of the Eternal, Sersi.

Unlike the majority of Eternals, Sersi wanted to live among humans, and pursued a number of careers whilst sidelining as an adventurer. From Ancient Greece to the 21st Century, Sersi stayed busy with adventures involving Pandora’s Box and run-of-the-mill supervillains, and teamed-up with both Captain America and Thor before eventually joining the Avengers.

The storyline of Neil Gaiman’s  2006 ‘Eternals’ series could form the basis of their first big screen entry. The Eternals, including Sersi, all live as ordinary humans with no memories of their true identities and unaware of the Deviants hunting them. Sersi herself only regains her memories after accidentally using her powers of molecular manipulation to turn a cat into a dragon, the first action of any Game of Thrones fan.

For now, though, Marvel are focusing on their next five films: Avengers: Infinity War, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, and a sequel to 2017s Spider-Man: Homecoming.
