You almost did it Marvel, you almost went a week without any major announcements, casting news, story details or general leakage.

However, as this writer works under the assumption of all Marvel news is good news and the news that broke today is certainly good, if not great news indeed. Marvel Studios has announced that Martin Freeman will play a significant role in the upcoming CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR.

Martin Freeman will be joining an already mammoth cast, which includes the already beloved and established Marvel characters such as Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye.

Also returning will be stars from AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON and THE WINTER SOLDIER. Elizabeth Olsen is taking on the role of the Scarlet Witch, Sebastian Stan as The Winter Soldier, Anthony Mackie as Falcon. The film will also welcome newcomers Daniel Brühl as Baron Zemo, Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther and to top things off Spiderman whenever an actor is confirmed.

In true Marvel style, Freeman’s role at the moment is wrapped in secrecy; he could be playing a character based on those from the Civil War comic book story line or a new character designed specifically for the movie (similar to Robert Redford’s role in CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER). It’s unclear if Freeman has signed a multiple picture deal with the studio, but lets face it, we hope that his character will have bigger implications within the Marvel Cinematic Universe so he could spar off against his Sherlock co-star Benedict Cumberbatch who will be playing Doctor Strange in his stand alone movie in 2016.

Marvel Head-honcho Kevin Feige had this to say about THE HOBBIT star joining his ever-expanding universe “From his roles as Bilbo Baggins and Doctor Watson to Tim in The Office, Martin’s range from the dramatic to the comedic has consistently impressed us, We couldn’t be more honoured or excited to have such a talented actor join the Marvel Cinematic Universe”

Freeman will be back on our television screen’s this Christmas with a SHERLOCK special with a three episode run scheduled to air in 2016.

Does Martin Freeman joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe excite you? Who do you think he will play? Do you think this cast is already too big for them to start adding in more characters? For more news as it happens keep checking back to Film and TV Now.
