Are you spiritually minded when it comes to love and the ideals represented by the world of Tarot? Such is the dilemma facing one troubled soul in writer/director Fenella Greenfield‘s new romantic noir 10 SWORDS & THE MOON.

Kal (Seth Somers) is a workaholic, heightened by the aftereffect of a break up with his last girlfriend two years before. His current assignment is preparing the catalogue for acclaimed artist Sukhminder Kaur, who is creating photographic versions of the darkest elements of the Tarot card set.
She believes that he has the right elements to compliment her latest endeavour. At home though, an overbearing flatmate has just met a new girl and they are really getting it on, something Kal is having difficulty with considering his own relationship status.

Then Molly (Hannah Morley) comes into his life and offers him a room for rent at her grandmother’s Norfolk residence. Molly seems to have a nice idyllic setting with terrific views of the North Sea and country roads easily navigated by a pedal bike. It is this that makes him more attracted to Molly and her world. However, Molly is not without her own problems, which begin to manifest themselves just as his own interpretation of the Tarot cards he is researching create their own revelations for him….

Unusual and involving tale of the nature of love and grief, dealing in part with the essence of the spiritual effect on one’s mental health. The whole world of Tarot is something that we occasionally may come into contact with, but it is all dependent on your own sense of fate and well-being to whether or not your life will take a certain path.

The film’s key strength is the evolving relationship between Kal and Molly which does yield some surprising and very heart-rending scenes, thanks to great performances from Somers and Morley who encapsulate the soul of their respective characters. The context of Tarot is played out as a subtext to this and dovetailed into the film as reflective of Kal’s own emotional arc.
That said, 10 SWORDS & THE MOON is an interesting personal film from writer/director Greenfield and it does have a lot to say about relationships and the power of love and family.
