The hopes of the human race are in the hands of a few fertile women, brought together for a Lottery TV extravaganza in the new sci-fi short THE DRAFT.

Best friends Kate and Jessica are two of five selected in a dystopian future where they are paraded as the lucky ones who can procreate and give the world what life truly means. However, when it comes to the key selection moments, the pair suddenly begin to realise and rethink what their true objectives are…

Director Raphaela Wagner‘s solid compact film, intended as a proof-of-concept, visually reminds one of THE HUNGER GAMES, but has a narrative firmly rooted in the classic sci-fi films of the 1970s like A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, ROLLERBALL and  LOGAN’S RUN amongst others, encompassing the reality show boom of shows like I’M A CELEBRITY and BIG BROTHER.

ABOUT THE FILM (reflections from the production team)

THE DRAFT is meant to evoke a debate around the lacking freedom of choice women still face today.

A woman should have complete control over her body but we can be scorned for not doing what others – and society – consider to be our duty, our purpose as women. This film is about what can happen when our right to be childfree by choice is taken from us. Equality demands that we as women and men respect each other’s individuality and choices, whether that’s becoming a mother or not.

THE DRAFT is a proof of concept short for a feature lengths project, which is in development. We are looking for co-producers and people who would like to support us and our film. ”

The core team:

Writer: Kim Taylor – Kim is a freelance writer for the screen and stage. Her original scripts reflect a clear interest in family, social issues, women’s rights and mental health. She is a drama writer who loves blending genres from gripping supernatural thrillers and sci-fi to dark comedy.

Kim’s crime thriller TV Pilot THE WATCHER was one of six winners of the Bisha K. Ali’s Netflix and Sky Screenwriters’ Fellowship 2021 and finalist for the BBC Studios ScriptWorks and Thousand Films Scriptwriting competition 2021.

Director: Raphaela Wagner – Raphaela is an ever curious writer-director with a strong interest in exploring the boundary between realism and fantasy and using it to spotlight important themes.

Her last short film Saitenstich premiered at the Oscar-qualifying Chicago International Children’s Film Festival and was long-listed for a Swiss Film Prize. She recently branched out into interactive media as well, directing a mid-length interactive film for the London-based company “Flavourworks” and her latest short film THE DRAFT, which was shot in Virtual production, is now entering the festival circuit.

Producer: Anke Sabrina Beermann – Anke graduated in veterinary medicine before studying acting in Munich and at the Ivana Chubbuck Studio in Los Angeles.

She worked as an actress on several TV and film productions before making her way to writing and producing her own work. She founded her production company Mary Productions in 2019. Anke is interested in critical political and social stories, which force the audience to think about their own lives and habits and the environment they live in.
The presenter of the lottery show is played by Leah Charles King, who has her own TV show on Channel 4.
