Legend

Well there are no surprises here to discover that STUDIOCANAL is celebrating a formidable opening weekend for LEGEND, which has taken £5.18m at the box office in the UK and Ireland.

The film, which showcases Tom Hardy’s powerhouse performances as both Ronnie and Reggie Kray, enjoyed a record breaking weekend with audiences propelling LEGEND to become the biggest ever opening for a British production with an 18 certificate and the biggest opening for a British film since STUDIOCANAL’s PADDINGTON in November 2014. LEGEND is now STUDIOCANAL’s biggest UK opening of all time, and also claims the record for biggest opening ever for a September release at the UK box office.

LEGEND opened across 522 sites, making it STUDIOCANAL’s widest ever opening, a title previously held by PADDINGTON. The film boasts a screen average of £9,900. You can read our five-star review of the superb film here. The film follows the real-life story of the two brothers operating an organised crime ring in London in the swinging sixties, helmed by Oscar-winning LA CONFIDENTIAL director Brian Helgeland.

Danny Perkins, CEO of STUDIOCANAL comments: “We worked closely with the filmmaking team as they crafted a superb film around a truly unique central performance and it has been fantastic to see this inspire such an incredible amount of excitement and appreciation from UK audiences. We are delighted to kick off the international roll out of LEGEND with such a big opening in its home territory.”

LEGEND’s record debut saw the week’s other major newcomer, THE MAZE RUNNER: SCORCH TRIALS, forced to settle for second place.

These figures round off a great weekend for LEGEND, following a hugely successful North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Saturday night. LEGEND held its World Premiere in London on September 3rd.

LEGEND is out now in the UK and hits the US on October 2nd.
