With Christmas rapidly approaching and many starting to plan the festive season, could there be a more better time for Emma Thompson‘s festive flick, LAST CHRISTMAS to drop? Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding are the eye-twinkling stars of the movie, lighting up the big screen for this one.

The cinema hasn’t been bursting at the seams in the last few years with Christmas rom-coms and with classic movies such as LOVE ACTUALLY and THE HOLIDAY, the pressure was on for LAST CHRISTMAS to come up trumps.

When footage first dropped of the film, it definitely delivered hight hopes. Having Clarke and Golding on board was also a clever casting move, as both are fresh from riding off the wave of success with GAME OF THRONES and CRAZY RICH ASIANS respectively.

The British actress plays the role of Kate, a young girl who is spending too much time drinking and partying after having a heart transplant. Feeling disconnected from herself, she resorts to partying, drinking and having one night stands in order to suppress her feelings.

Last Christmas

She spends her days dressed as an elf working in an all-year-round Christmas shop and one day, she spots a handsome stranger loitering outside the shop called Tom (Golding). The two strike up a close friendship and he becomes almost her conscious and guide. Of course as predicted, feelings develop between them. However, Tom is rather distant and is quite mysterious having no phone, only meeting up when it is convenient for him and it doesn’t take long until things become predictable and you can work out where the film is going…

The movie serves up a great balance of humour, festive spirit, a sprinkling of George Michael’s songs and emotion, which will no doubt have some audience members in tears. Notoriously, not all Christmas films get rave reviews, such as LOVE ACTUALLY, but this film is still likely to draw in the crowds and become the go-to movie to watch and enjoy during the Christmas season. It has all the elements of a great festive flick and it is an enjoyable watch, but predictable for the savvy movie-goers.

Overall, the film has everything you want in a Christmas movie and it has been beautifully penned by Emma Thompson, who brings all the giggles in her role as Kate’s Eastern European mother who is desperately trying to fix her daughter. For those who love George Michael’s song, seeing a snow-covered London and a sprinkle of Christmas spirit, then this film is for you. You will certainly never not look up in the same way again…
