What does the Sunshine State of California conjure up for you? If you have never been, it can be representative of both culture and sub-culture and a fair amount of ‘Hooray for Hollywood’. Yet, in the context of those who have lived and breathed the world of the ‘City of Angels’, they can offer without the price of a flight or accommodation around Sunset Boulevard a look inside of the images and perceptions of what LA is.
A new documentary, CALIFORNIA LOCOS RENAISSANCE AND REBELLION looks at how the past legacies are impacting on present ideals and emotions through a local art collective called the ‘California Locos‘.
Chaz Bojórquez, Dave Tourjé (above) , John Van Hamersveld, Norton Wisdom and Gary Wong are well placed to give insight on how the city in its’ own inner light can shine brightly on the perceptions of ski, sun and surf until the night falls.
There are some interesting reflections, particularly in terms of the performances at the Shrine Auditorium (at one point the venue for the annual Academy Awards) from the likes of Cream and Jimi Hendrix before he became the iconic immortal legend.
This is a compact and insightful account of a time in the Los Angeles psyche that has impacted on everything since and gives an enlightening perspective.
CALIFORNIA LOCOS RENAISSANCE AND REBELLION won the Short Documentary Award at the Los Angeles International Film Festival 2023.
