Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley may join Barbara Streisand’s Catherine the Great biopic…

Despite the rumours circulating that Keira Knightley may star in the DEADPOOL sequel, it has been revealed that she is in talks about a new project – but it’s for a very different film…

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the two-time Academy Award nominee is eyeing a CATHERINE THE GREAT biopic that will see Barbra Streisand in the director’s chair with Kristina Lauren Anderson penning the screenplay, which tells the story of Sophia Augusta, who takes control of her life, her marriage, and her kingdom becoming Russia’s most celebrated and beloved monarch: Catherine the Great.

Barbra Streisand may have won two Academy Awards for acting, but she is no stranger to working behind the camera too, as she made her directorial debut in 1983 with the musical drama YENTL, in which she also starred. She followed that with THE PRINCE OF TIDES IN 1991 and THE MIRROR HAS TWO FACES in 1996.

The CATHERINE THE GREAT biopic will mark Streisand’s first narrative feature as director in more than two decades and will no doubt prove to be a popular choice for a big screen adaptation. Marlene Dietrich famously played the part in Josef von Sternberg’s 1934 classic The Scarlet Empress and, more recently, Catherine Zeta-Jones played the part for a 1996 television miniseries, also titled Catherine the Great.

Knightley, who has been nominated for an Oscar back in 2006 for PRIDE AND PREDJUDICE and in 2014 for THE IMITATION GAME, has been busy in recent months on Broadway in New York. She most recently starred in EVEREST alongside Jason Clarke, Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Robin Wright, Michael Kelly, Sam Worthington, Emily Watson and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Keira Knightley can be seen on the big screen soon in David Frankel’s COLLATERAL BEAUTY alongside Will Smith, Helen Mirren, Edward Norton, Naomie Harris and Michael Pena

COLLATERAL BEAUTY will hit cinemas December 16th, 2016.
