Idris Elba has discussed his experience with COVID-19 and has suggested that a lockdown for a week each year would be a good reminder.

Idris Elba has recently spoken about his firsthand experience with suffering coronavirus and in a recent interview, the British actor shared his thoughts on the idea that people should spend a week in quarantine every year once the coronavirus pandemic is over to “remember this time”.

This may not necessarily be a popular global opinion, especially as many countries are still under lockdown and hoping restrictions will be lifted soon, but the Luther actor told the Associated Press that contracting the virus “turned around” his life and called the experience “definitely scary and unsettling and nervous”.

Elba was one of the first well known individuals to have contracted the virus after testing positive March 16th, but thankfully he only suffered with mild symptoms and has since recovered along with wife Sabrina Dhowre.

The actor shared his thoughts on the pandemic:

“You know, everyone’s sort of feeling the way we have been feeling, but it has definitely been sort of just a complete upheaval.”

He continued, “I think that the world should take a week of quarantine every year just to remember this time. Remember each other. I really do.”

This is a lovely gesture to those who have suffered, died because of the virus or lost love ones to it, but maybe there will be a remembrance day somewhere down the line instead? It may not be feasible to have a whole week lockdown each year.

The couple have also been confirmed as new UN Goodwill Ambassadors and have teamed up with the United Nations International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to launch a $40m (£32m) fund to support rural farmers trying to cope with the COVID-19 outbreak.

Idris and his wife have been recuperating in New Mexico since hearing of his positive test results and it’s great to see them both healthy once again.
