Idris Elba is certainly proving to be a man that keeps the casting rumour mill turning of late and once again he has signed up for another movie – and he may possibly have landed a role in a much-loved franchise – STAR TREK.
Despite all of the speculation, the British actor will be working with writer/director Harmony Korine known largely for the successful hit SPRING BREAKERS. Elba will be involved in THE TRAP, which tells the story of gangster rap artist Rico (Idris Elba) and his best friend Slim (Benicio Del Toro), who took the fall for a robbery the duo committed. Fourteen years later, Slim is finally released from prison and discovers whilst he has been banged up for the crime they both committed, life has fared pleasantly for Rico who is at the top of his career and about to enjoy a triumphant night at the Grammy Awards. To make matters worse for Slim, he sees that his former best friend’s life is not only flourishing professionally, but also personally – he is a happily married man and has been raising Slim’s son as his own.
The plot oozes the tale of revenge and the great casting of Elba and Del Toro will no doubt prove to be a winning combination. How can we not love anything Elba is in? Joining the duo is Al Pacino as Slim’s parole officer, Robert Pattinson as a member of a surfer group and James Franco as Rico’s cocaine-induced manager. What a FANTASTIC casting ensemble and the film sounds great! Production for THE WRAP is due to commence later in the year.
Despite Elba’s busy schedule, rumours are rife that he may also be playing the villain in Justin Lin‘s STAR TREK 3. The next film in the franchise is being written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung and little is still known about the actual plot itself, but could Elba be one of the great villains? We hope so! Â
There is no official confirmation as of yet that Elba is officially involved alongside Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana and Anton Yelchin.Â
STAR TREK 3 is slated for release July 8th, 2016.
