Relationships are falling apart and some relationships are heating up in the new episode of HUMANS on Channel 4 – and it has definitely taken the drama up another level.

For the last few weeks, we have seen the capabilities of the Synths in the show and just what they are able to do – which is virtually everything – and in episode 4, the feeling of redundancy in comparison to the robots is ever present and is a recurrent theme throughout the show – as is the build up of sexual tension between certain individuals and their Synths.

We are of course talking about Anita (Gemma Chan) who has had her ‘adult mode’ put to use for the first time in the series. She has already garnered the unwanted attentions of the hormonal teenager in the family, Toby (Theo Stevenson) who has turned down the advances of a girl his age (and species!) at a party and now his dad, Joe (Tom Goodman-Hill) the primary user with the power to control her, is feeling ignored by his wife and is under the assumption she’s having an affair. So what does he do? He activates the adult mode and gets rather up close and personal with Anita – on the sofa…

It draws up the question: is it hard not to develop an emotional attachment to the Synth living in your house 24/7 for whom you are responsible for each day? It’s a tough call and that is exactly what Pete (Neil Maskell) is experiencing with his now ex-girlfriend and her emotional attachment to physic Synth, Simon on who she depends physically and somewhat emotionally. Pete is left feeling useless and totally redundant. It seems things are about to go from bad to worse for Pete, as unbeknown to him, his colleague Karen goes to bed and removes a blue plastic bag from her mouth filled with food and the red wine she’s been drinking. Lovely. So she’s a synth too!

Humans
Feelings of attachment come at a price much heftier than the price tags of the Synths – it messes with the human head and morals. This was evident at a teenage party where a rather randy teenage boy wanted some alone time with the household deactivated female Synth and as Mattie (Lucy Carless) points out, it basically constitutes towards the Synth equivalent of date rape.

Things were looking even more grim for some Synths who were involved in a secret ‘fight club’ where basically humans batter them to the point of destruction, that is until Niska (Emily Berrington) turns up and decides she wants a piece of the action. However, her target was not her fellow kind, but humans who she decided to give a taste of their own medicine. It seems Niska is becoming rather addicted to the homicidal warpath she is on.

Humans

Having sex with them and fighting them and seeing the way in which they are treated does draw empathy towards them, as they are abused by individuals and beaten up to a pulp by humans who are desperate to show their power over them and that they are indeed the dominating species. It gives the expression ‘rage against the machine’ to a whole new level…

With all of the drama in episode 4 reaching a who new drama, could we now see a post-apocalyptic battle that even the Terminator would be proud of? Maybe… However, the question which still lingers is what will Leo (Colin Morgan) do? He considers them as his family and is still desperate to find Anita. He has come close to finding her after making contact online with Mattie and was surprised when a teenage girl turns up. Showing Mattie a photo of “Mia” sends a wave of panic through her and she manages to slip away without giving him any more information.

A bit of research by Max leads them to Dr Millican’s house, where we learn a lot more about their history. Millican explains why he left the synth project: “David was taking his research in a direction I wasn’t comfortable with.”

And Leo reveals he’s David’s son. The one who died. Ooh yes, things are starting to get interesting!

Humans

Leo is now in a difficult situation: he has discovered the programme his dad used to give Synths like him and Niska consciousness. What happens to his character over the remaining four weeks will certainly be one of the most interesting plots…

Each week the slow-burning thriller HUMANS  continues to capture the audience’s imagination as the multi-faceted plots develop each week. It explores the debates surrounding artificial intelligence brilliantly and the contemporary twist on it makes it eerily easy to relate to. Is the start of a robotic revolution? Maybe. Either way this series just keeps getting better and better.

HUMANS continues on Channel 4 at 9pm on Sundays.
