CAROL leads the Golden Globe film nominations, with THE BIG SHORT, THE REVENANT and STEVE JOBS close behind…
During the early hours of Thursday morning in LA, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association revealed the nominees for the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards.
America Ferrera, Dennis Quaid, Angela Bassett and Chloë Grace Moretz took to the stage to announce the names of the films, television series and actors set to compete for a coveted Golden Globe award.
The announcement of nominees has come just a day after the Screen Actors Guild announced nominations for its own awards, as the world of film and TV gear up for the awards season, which is swiftly drawing upon us.
Leonardo DiCaprio, still chasing his first Oscar victory, edged closer to Hollywoods top award, as he took a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s THE REVENANT a bloody frontier drama that was also nominated for best drama and best director.
DiCaprio is up against some stiff competition including Bryan Cranston for TRUMBO, Michael Fassbender for STEVE JOBS, Eddie Redmayne for THE DANISH GIRL and Will Smith for CONCUSSION.
But the big winner in the movie categories was CAROL, which leads the way with 5 nominations including best drama, along with a best director nomination for Todd Haynes, acting nominations for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, and a nomination for best score. THE BIG SHORT boasts nominations for two actors: Christian Bale and Steve Carell, for its script, and for best picture in the musical or comedy category.
Joining Blanchett and Mara in the best actress category is Saoirse Ronan for BROOKLYN, Brie Larson for ROOM and Alicia Vikander for THE DANISH GIRL.
On the television front, no series stood out on its own, with six earning three Globes nominations each – AMERICAN CRIME, FARGO, MR. ROBOT, OUTLANDER, TRANSPARENT, and WOLF HALL.
Streaming pioneer Netflix led the television nominations with eight.
The Golden Globe nominations have proven to be very fruitful for the Brits, with Eddie Redmayne, Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet, Maggie Smith, Idris Elba and Mark Rylance all listed. It is a good day for Elba who has been nominated twice: for his role in the brilliant BEASTS OF NO NATION and for the TV show LUTHER.
The nominations and eventual winners are decided by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – a group of entertainment editors and writers from 55 countries who report on the industry year-round.
Hosted by Ricky Gervais, the Golden Globe Awards 2016 will take place January 10th 2016 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
