Galaxy-Quest

After the bizarre announcement yesterday of a FULL HOUSE television sequel series, news dropped earlier today that Paramount television is in the process of developing a new televised serial based on one of the 90’s most beloved cult classics, GALAXY QUEST.

Financially successful upon its release, GALAXY QUEST was praised by critics and audiences alike and is dubbed by STAR TREK fans as the best unofficial Trek film of all time.

For those who aren’t familiar with the aforementioned cult classic, GALAXY QUEST is a parody of the iconic television series STAR TREK. In which a set of actors from a beloved 1970’s sci-fi television series are mistaken for intergalactic heroes by an alien species who, believing that the fictional television show was in fact a historical documentary, recruit the actors to help them fight off their races extermination from a dangerous alien threat.

GALAXY QUEST was written by Robert Gordon and directed by Dean Parisot, who are both expected to return to the project.

It’s too early to assume anything about original cast members returning (the film boasted an impressive cast featuring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell and Daryl Mitchell), but it’s safe to assume that the new television series will focus on a new generation of actors within the fictional show.

It’s always tricky to launch a television show based upon a popular film. Sometimes it works (FARGO, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES) and sometimes it fails miserably (ZOMBIELAND and ROSEMARY’S BABY. Anyone?). Maybe a television reboot is exactly what this smart and satirical franchise needs to reintroduce itself into the public eye.
