It’s official, Arnie is back!

The wait is over! The TERMINATOR GENISYS trailer dropped and upon viewing it, it’s clear that it is beautiful. The colours and CGI in the scenes of battle are really striking. The contrast of these bright colours with the otherwise dark colour pallet has a really good effect.

Things kick off with Jason Clarke’s John Connor standing in the middle of a studio addressing a bunch of humans in the Skynet-sponsored dystopian future Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) warned us all about. Jai Courtney’s Kyle Reese is looking on, ignorant of the fact he’s actually looking at his own son.

As for the scene in the bunker in which the presumed leader of the resistance gives a speech to his troops, it comes across slightly generic. Although, to be fair there is no engagement with the characters yet, so I cannot judge the film on my emotional response to it. It would be hasty to review the movie’s scenes depicted in the trailer; this is only a fraction of the final product.

The scene about 30 seconds into the trailer in which we see bodies, presumably Terminators, hung up in rows ready to be spat out into the world by a fairground-style claw grabber is very bleak. They really are going for the dystopian feel. There are some nice references back to the original movie, the shot of the police officer and his car at the end of the alley 57 seconds in being one of them. As well as the iconic line: “Come with me if you want to live”. Not forgetting of course the immortal line: “I’ll be back,” once again uttered by Arnold himself.

Speaking of Arnold Schwarzenegger, his presence in this is really quite cool. Although Arnie isn’t the most nuanced of actors he has a real screen presence and his on-screen charisma is undeniable. An older version of him in this movie should make for an interesting and fresh dynamic while still retaining the fact that he can kick ass. I believed the CGI young Arnie would be gone with Terminator Salvation, however it seems he is back and will square up to his older counterpart in a fight scene where Schwarzenegger literally fights himself, which should be ridiculous yet fun no doubt.

The pointy armed shiny Terminators looked ridiculous, the special effects with the cyborgs becoming metallic and doing various shape shifting things with their arms looked really corny. However, the film shouldn’t suffer too much if this is one small aspect of it, but of course it could be better with the all out super-powered fist fights, e.g with super strong cyborgs smashing each other through walls for example, rather than the stainless steel shape shifters that are present for some of this trailer.

On the upside Emilia Clarke of GAME OF THRONES is always fantastic, the gun-toting star looks great on-screen alongside physics defying stunts and explosive action. TERMINATOR GENISYS is somewhat a departure from what The Mother Of Dragons is used to, but based on this trailer she seems to have taken to the sci-fi action genre like a duck to water.
