Families come in all shapes and sizes, but if there’s one thing all of these animated families have in common, it’s that they’re always there for each other when it counts. To celebrate the release of MONSTER FAMILY in cinemas and on Sky Cinema, we have taken a look at some of the 10 best animated families in the business…
The Wishbones
The Wishbone clan weren’t always the happiest family – and that’s before they got cursed by an evil witch. But when dad Frank, mum Emma, and kids Fay and Max were transformed into their monstrous fancy dress costumes, they soon learned that by working together and learning to appreciate one another, they could overcome anything the forces of evil had to throw at them. Awww.
The Flintstones
Flintstones, meet the Flintstones, they’re the modern stone age family! Hard-working family man Fred Flintstone always makes his wife Wilma and daughter Pebbles his first priority – his family is the most important thing to him (as well as having a yabba dabba doo time, of course).
The Simpsons
This iconic animated family have their own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for a reason. Although Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie argue in almost every episode, they’ll always overcome their differences in the end.
Despicable Me
Supervillain Gru, along with his army of little yellow minions, adopts three young girls from an orphanage as part of his elaborate plan to steal the moon. But as Gru begins to care about the girls and love them as his own daughters, his criminal enterprises suffer – because it turns out, there’s more to life than being despicable.
The Incredibles
Even superhero families sometimes have their problems. Dad Bob wants to be a hero, but Helen wants him more involved with their family. Older daughter Violet is shy and awkward, but has a crush on a classmate she can’t look in the eye, and their son Dash is a show-off who just wants to explore his super-speed powers. Family saves the day, though, because when super-villain Syndrome attacks, this Incredible family discovers that while they’re super on their own, they’re even stronger together.
The Addams Family
Okay, they’re not the most conventional of families – their cousin is just a mop of hair, they keep a disembodied hand as a pet, and the less said about Uncle Fester, the better – but while the outside world might be spooked, the Addams Family truly love and care for each other, and nothing can break their family loyalty.
The Wild Thornberrys
“Hi, I’m Eliza Thornberry, part of your average family!” was the sentence that kicked off every episode of The Wild Thornberrys – but a family of nature documentarians, traveling the world, learning about different kinds of animals aren’t really average! Eliza has a secret gift of being able to communicate with animals and befriends many species of wild animals on the way, always with her family and their CommVee in tow – their adventures are a family affair!
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves
After losing her dad and being exiled into the dangerous forest by her wicked stepmother, Snow White found herself a new family – in the form of seven dwarf miners! Doc, Grumpy, Happy, Sleepy, Bashful, Sneezy, and Dopey take Snow White in and give her a home. It might not be the most common arrangement, but it works for them.
Finding Nemo
An overprotective clownfish named Marlin battles sharks, jellyfish, and a whole host of other oceanic dangers as he searches for his abducted son Nemo. Both Marlin and Nemo eventually learn what parents and kids really need from each other – and they also get to make up their own improvised families along the way, too.
Brave
Princess Merida, the courageous daughter of Scottish King Fergus and Queen Elinor, is so determined to make her own path in life that she defies an age-old tradition, bringing chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse. Brave is ultimately the story of a mother and a daughter losing and then finding one another again, though they are both changed by their experiences.
