Family and fast cars.

There’s no putting the brakes on the Fast and Furious franchise, as DreamWorks Animation Television and Netflix begin developing an animated spin-off.

The animated series will explore themes of camaraderie and family familiar to the franchise, and focus on Tony Toretto; the younger cousin of Vin Diesel’s Dom. Tony and his friends will be recruited by a government agency to infiltrate a league of street racers, used as a front for crime.

Fast and Furious animated series

Netflix’s VP of Kids and Family, Melissa Cobb said: “We are thrilled to take our fantastic partnership with DreamWorks Animation to the next level with new opportunities from the vast library of Universal Pictures. The Fast & Furious franchise is a global phenomenon beloved by audiences of all ages, and we can’t wait to get started on the new animated series that will capture the action, heart, humour and global appeal of the feature films.”

Beginning in 2001 with The Fast and the Furious and spawning seven sequels, the Fast and Furious series is Universal Studios biggest and highest-grossing franchise. Mainly notable for dealing with street racing, heists, espionage, and its fearlessness embracing the all-out implausible. With the film series success, it was only a matter of time before the Fast and Furious universe expanded.

Not bad for a franchise that only kicked into gear four films in.

A premiere date for the animated series is to be announced.
