It seems so ridiculous to even read those words, that the lovely actress has tweeted a picture of her smiling in resistance to a Turkish politician, but sadly it is true.

Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister, Bulent Arinc, spoke at a ceremony to mark Eid – celebrating the end of Ramadan- where he urged Turkish women to abide by a rigorous code – and know what is “haram,” or forbidden.

“A woman will know what is haram and not haram.  She will not laugh out loud in public. She will not be inviting in her attitudes and will protect her chasteness.”

Yes, you have read this correctly – no laughing.  Many were outraged with such suggestions and his comments were widely ridiculed.

Instagram, Facebook and Twitter were set alight with pictures of women laughing and the hashtag, #direnkahkaha (ignore him – laugh) began to trend globally.

The HARRY POTTER star, Emma Watson joined in, tweeting a photo of herself laughing in public and she also changed her Twitter profile picture to a photo of her looking exuberant and giggling.

The 24-year-old has recently started working for the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and The Empowerment of Women as a Goodwill Ambassador.

The accomplished actress, humanitarian, and recent graduate of Ivy League institution Brown University, will dedicate her efforts as UN Women Goodwill Ambassador towards the empowerment of young women and will serve as an advocate for UN Women’s HeForShe campaign in promoting gender equality – a movement which calls upon men and boys to stand up against the persisting inequalities faced by women and girls globally.
