Emma Stone, straight off her Oscar-nominated performance in this years superb BIRDMAN, is already eyeing a project with possible awards potential behind it.

Stone is in talks to play the female lead in directors Damien Chazelle‘s follow-up project to this years intense jazz drumming movie WHIPLASH, entitled LA LA LAND.

According to various sources, the film will be a musical about two strangers trying to find love and fame in the heart of downtown LA. Emma Stone is in contention to play the role of Mia, an aspiring actress who has just moved to LA and is finding it hard adjusting to her new home and struggling to get her career off the ground when she meets a Jazz pianist Sebastian, the two connect and learn that managing a relationship and a career in the art’s in modern-day LA, isn’t exactly a match made in heaven.

Miles Teller, who played the lead in Chazelle’s WHIPLASH, was set to star as Sebastian but due to scheduling conflicts on the DIVERGENT franchise and the FANTASTIC FOUR has had to pull out, leaving the internet a buzz with who could possibly play the romantic lead. Ryan Gosling has been offered the role, but has made no comment as to his involvement with the film.

If Gosling were to star, it would mark the third collaboration between the two actors, the first being 2011 romantic comedy CRAZY STUPID LOVE and the second being 2013 pulpy GANGSTER SQUAD.

In terms of how the musical format will work it’s way into the film, director Damien Chazelle had this to say: ”I’d like to make a contemporary musical about LA, starting with the LA we know but slowly building to a vision of the city as romantic metropolis. I’d like to make a musical about the way LA’s peculiar rhythms can push its residents to the edge of their emotions–be they hope, desperation or love.”
