After the runaway success that was Disney’s CINDERELLA, It just makes sense that the mouse house would continue to heavily focus on more live action adaptations of their animated classics.

With a sequel to Tim Burton’s ALICE IN WONDERLAND already filmed and with the Emma Watson vehicle BEAUTY AND THE BEAST about to go into production, Disney have decided that the next live action adaptation will focus on their most badass of princesses, MULAN.

MULAN tells the story of a young woman who, fearful that her father may be drafted into fight a war against the incoming Hun invasion (led by the ruthless Shan Yu), disguises herself as a boy and takes her fathers place in battle risking her families honour and her own safety along the way.

There’s very little information surrounding this project at this moment in time. Disney have hired screenwriters Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek to pen the script, but that’s about it. Whether it will stick to the 1998 animated classic is unknown, but one can imagine that with Disney’s current track record with rebooting their own animated films is that it will have more of a gritty and realistic feel to it, which makes sense with such a action packed and violent story.

MULAN may be some time away, but its definitely a project to get excited about. With the right director and cast (something that I’m sure disney wont have a problem with) it could be a great family friendly ‘epic’ that takes us through ancient China, and could even be the start of a new franchise for the already behemoth film and animation company.

Are you excited for this new adaptation of MULAN? Or are you sick to death of all the live action princess stories? For more information as it happens keep checking back to Film and TV Now.
